How to Shoot Vintage Macro Without a Dedicated Macro Lens
Ever been out walking with your favorite old film camera, or maybe a cool early 2000s mirrorless setup, and you spot a perfectly patterned, dew-covered leaf? You step in close, frame up the shot, grab the focus ring, and twist it until it stops. But when you look through the viewfinder, the leaf is just a blurry green blob. You pull the camera back, inch by inch, until the leaf finally pops into sharp focus. And suddenly, you realize you are a foot and a half away. The leaf occupies maybe ten percent of your frame. Bummer.

This is my absolute favorite party trick. It sounds completely wrong, but the math behind it makes perfect sense. Think about what a standard fifty-millimeter lens does: it takes a massive world in front of you and shrinks it all down so it fits perfectly onto a tiny rectangle of film. So, what happens if you take that lens, turn it entirely backward, and shoot through it in reverse?
