We have all been there. You are out shooting with a friend, the sun is hanging low in the sky, and they walk right in front of it. A gorgeous, cinematic halo of golden hour backlight wraps around their hair. You pull your camera up to your eye, trust the meter, and take the shot. You feel like an absolute visionary.

A week later, you get the scans back from the lab. The background looks spectacular. The sunset is perfectly exposed. But your friend? They are an anonymous, totally underexposed shadow monster. You have accidentally shot a silhouette.

I ruined plenty of rolls of Kodak Portra doing exactly this before someone finally sat me down and explained the magic of spot metering. Shooting direct backlight sounds intimidating, but once you understand how your camera "sees" the world, it is actually incredibly predictable. Let's break down exactly how to meter for skin tones when the sun is blazing right at your lens.

Why Your Camera Gets Confused by Backlight

To understand how to fix the problem, you need to understand why it happens in the first place.

Most cameras—especially vintage SLRs from the 70s and 80s—use something called general or "center-weighted" average metering. When you look through the viewfinder, the camera averages out all the bright and dark areas in the entire frame, trying to find a safe middle ground. If you are shooting a landscape with the sun behind you, this works pretty well.

But when you shoot a backlit portrait, a massive source of intense bright light is flooding directly into the lens. The camera’s internal brain panics. It sees that blinding sky and thinks, "Whoa, it is way too bright out here! I need to cut the light down so the image doesn't blow out." Because it lowers the overall exposure to save the bright sky, your subject's face—which is hidden in shadow, facing away from the sun—goes completely pitch black.

What Spot Metering Does Better

This is where spot metering steps in to save the day. Instead of looking at the entire frame, a spot meter ignores 99% of the scene. It strictly measures a tiny little circle directly in the center of the frame (usually about 1% to 5% of your viewing area).

By switching your camera to spot metering, or using an external handheld meter, you gain total control. You can point that tiny circle directly at your subject's cheek, entirely ignoring the giant blazing sun behind them, and ask the camera, "How much light do I need to perfectly expose just this tiny patch of skin?"

The Secret Trap: The "Middle Gray" Rule

Now, if you just point the spot meter at a face and lock in those exact settings, you still might not get the perfect shot. Why? Because you need to understand one fundamental, slightly annoying truth about light meters: they are kind of dumb.

Light meters do not know what they are looking at. They do not know if you are metering a white wedding dress, a black tuxedo, or a human face. All light meters are calibrated to turn whatever they look at into exactly "middle gray" (an 18% gray tone).

This means if you spot meter someone with very pale skin, and shoot exactly what the meter tells you, the camera will underexpose the shot to turn that pale skin into middle gray. Your subject will look muddy and dark. If you spot meter someone with deep, dark skin, the camera will overexpose to try and pull those rich tones up to a washed-out middle gray.

To get true-to-life skin tones, you have to tell the camera what to do with the reading.

Step-by-Step: Metering for Different Skin Tones

Here is the exact workflow I use when shooting a friend in harsh backlight. It takes a little practice to memorize, but it quickly becomes second nature.

  • Step 1: Get in close. If you are using your camera's internal spot meter, zoom in or walk physically closer so their cheek fills the center circle of the viewfinder. Make sure no bright backlight is bleeding into the metering area.
  • Step 2: Read the value. Let's say your camera says the perfect exposure for that cheek is 1/125th of a second at f/4.
  • Step 3: Compensate for their skin tone. This is the crucial step. You must adjust your final settings based on how light or dark your subject's skin is compared to "middle gray."

Here is a quick cheat sheet for the compensation step:

  • For Very Pale or Fair Skin: Open up by +1 full stop. Since the meter wants to make pale skin gray, opening up adds more light to push their skin back to its natural lightness. (Change f/4 to f/2.8, or drop 1/125th to 1/60th).
  • For Medium, Tan, or Olive Skin: You can usually shoot exactly what the meter says, or maybe open up just +0.5 stops. Medium skin naturally sits very close to the camera's baseline middle gray expectation.
  • For Deep or Dark Skin: Close down by -0.5 to -1 full stop. The meter will try to over-brighten deep skin into a chalky gray. By underexposing the spot reading slightly, you preserve the natural richness and depth of their complexion.

Embracing the Blown-Out Background

A lot of photographers get anxious when they do this for the first time. They realize that if they open their lens up to properly expose a face in the shadows, the backlit sky is going to get totally blasted with light. It will probably go completely white.

Let it happen.

When you shoot color negative film, film handles overexposure beautifully. The background might blow out, but instead of looking like ugly digital clipping, it transforms into a soft, glowing, ethereal white canvas that makes your subject pop. In portraiture, the face is the most important part of the photograph. It is always better to have a perfectly exposed face and a blown-out sky than a perfect sky with a muddy, unrecognizable subject.

Leveling Up Your Backlight Portraits

Once you get comfortable throwing your meter around and compensating for skin tones, harsh backlight transforms from your worst enemy into your favorite creative tool. It adds instant drama, separates your subject from the background, and gives photos that dreamy, nostalgic quality we all love about analog photography.

If your current camera doesn't have a spot metering mode (and many wonderful 35mm classics do not), do not panic. The easiest workaround is to invest in a dedicated light meter.
