Understanding Split Prism and Microprism Focusing Screens
I still remember the first time I picked up an old vintage SLR camera, held it up to my eye, and looked through the viewfinder. Instead of the totally clear window I was used to on my digital camera, I was greeted by this weird, complicated-looking target right in the dead center. It had a circle with a line through it, surrounded by a sparkly sort of ring, and I honestly had no clue what I was supposed to do with it.

That little target in the middle of your viewfinder is actually one of the cleverest pieces of mechanical engineering in photography. It is called a split-image and microprism focusing screen, and once you learn how to read it, manual focusing becomes incredibly fast, accurate, and honestly, a lot of fun.

The Magic of the Focusing Screen
Before we dissect the circle itself, it helps to understand what you are actually looking at when you put your eye to the finder. You are not just looking through a hollow tube at your subject. The light comes through your lens, bounces straight up off a mirror inside the camera body, and hits a piece of specifically textured glass or plastic sitting right above the mirror. This is the focusing screen.
Think of the focusing screen like a piece of finely ground, translucent tracing paper. Your lens projects the image onto this screen, and you are looking at that projected image. Most cameras from the nineteen-seventies and eighties use a three-part screen to help you focus: the matte field, the microprism collar, and the split-image prism.
The Split-Image Prism: Nailing the Hard Lines
Dead in the center of the screen, you will usually find a small circle cut in half by a horizontal line. This is your split-image prism, sometimes just called a split prism. It is technically made of two tiny prisms angled in opposite directions.
Here is how you use it: find a straight vertical line in your scene. That could be a doorframe, a light pole, the side of a tall building, or even the bridge of someone's nose if you are shooting a portrait. Put that split circle directly over the line. If your image is out of focus, the line will look like it has been sliced in half and shifted aside. The top half will not line up with the bottom half.
Turn your lens focus ring. As you get closer to perfect focus, those two halves will slide toward each other. When they perfectly click together to form one unbroken line, you are dead-on in focus. It is incredibly satisfying, kind of like snapping a puzzle piece into place.
A quick pro tip: If you are shooting something that only has horizontal lines, like a fence or the horizon, the horizontal split prism will not help you much. Just tilt your camera forty-five or ninety degrees so the split cuts across the line, focus the lens, and then level your camera back out to take the shot.
The Microprism Collar: When Lines Escape You
Surrounding that inner split circle is usually a wider ring that looks sort of like a sparkly, textured diamond pattern. This is the microprism collar. While the split prism is perfect for distinct, straight edges, the microprism ring is your best friend when you are shooting things with lots of texture but no obvious straight lines.
Think about focusing on a bush full of leaves, a textured brick wall, or the fabric of someone's sweater. If you put the microprism ring over that area while it is out of focus, the texture will look shattered, fractured, and violently sparkly. It essentially breaks the out-of-focus image into dozens of tiny, shimmering dots.
As you turn the focus ring toward the sweet spot, that frantic shimmering starts to settle down. The moment you hit perfect focus, the sparkly dot pattern completely vanishes, and the image snaps sharply into view, looking just like normal glass. It is a very sudden snap, which makes it incredibly useful for quickly grabbing focus on organic shapes and textures where the split line would be useless.
The Matte Field: Composing the Rest of the Frame
Everything outside of that center target is called the matte field. It is a finely textured, frosted surface. When you change focus, the image on the matte field just slowly blurs in and out, much like it does on modern digital cameras or lenses without focusing aids.
While the center aids are your primary tools, the matte field is crucial for checking your overall depth of field. It helps you see how blurry your background is going to be. Some people even prefer focusing purely on the matte field for fast-moving street photography, but it definitely takes a trained eye to know when the matte field is perfectly sharp compared to relying on the center prisms.
The Dreaded Viewfinder Blackout
If you play around with vintage cameras long enough, you will eventually run into a frustrating quirk: one half of your split prism suddenly turns completely black.
Do not panic, your camera is not broken. This happens because of the angle at which light needs to hit those tiny prisms. If your lens does not let in enough light, or more specifically, if the aperture of your lens is too small, the light hits the prism at too steep of an angle and it blacks out. This typically happens with zoom lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or slower, which is why a lot of vintage zoom lenses can be tricky to focus indoors.
It also happens if your eye is not perfectly centered directly behind the viewfinder eyepiece. If you ever see that annoying black half-moon, try shifting your eye slightly up, down, or side to side. If your lens is just too slow and the prism refuses to clear up, ignore the split center and rely entirely on the matte field to get your focus.
Putting Together a Faster Workflow
Once you understand what these tools do, your workflow will naturally speed up. Here is how I usually shoot when I am walking around with an old manual SLR:
- First, I spot my subject and bring the camera to my eye.
- Second, I put the center circle directly over my subject's eye, or a harsh line on whatever I am shooting.
- Third, I quickly snap the focus ring until the lines connect in the split prism or the microprism ring stops shimmering.
- Finally, keeping my finger still on the focus ring, I slightly shift the camera to actually compose my shot exactly how I want it, and then I fire the shutter.
This method is called focus and recompose, and it is the standard way practically everyone shot photos before cameras had multiple autofocus points spread across the whole screen. Just be careful doing this if you are using a prime lens like an f/1.4 wide open. The depth of field is so incredibly thin that physically pivoting the camera to recompose can actually swing your subject right out of the focus plane!
