Winter Photography: How to Keep Your Vintage Gear Alive in the Cold
There is honestly nothing quite like waking up, seeing a fresh layer of snow outside your window, and grabbing a camera to head out. The world goes completely quiet. The harsh, contrasting shadows of summer are replaced by a giant, natural softbox, and everything feels beautifully still and cinematic. But as much as I love wandering around in twenty-degree weather looking for the perfect, minimalist snowy composition, vintage cameras do not necessarily share my enthusiasm for the freezing cold.
My first winter shooting film, I practically ruined an entire roll and nearly short-circuited my favorite everyday carry by bringing an icy, snow-dusted camera straight into a sweaty, overheated coffee shop. It turned into a completely fogged-up brick for three days. You only make that mistake once.
Over the years, I have learned a lot about how vintage mechanical and electronic gear handles extreme temperatures. Whether you are walking through a snowy neighborhood, hiking a frozen trail, or just trying to catch some frost on your morning commute, here is how you keep your gear—and your fingers—working properly.
The Great Battery Drain
If you are shooting a fully mechanical camera, you can skip this section. But if you are using an electronic seventies SLR, a classic nineties point-and-shoot, or an early digital camera, you need to understand battery chemistry. Cold weather absolutely brutalizes batteries.
When temperatures drop below freezing, the chemical reactions inside your batteries slow down drastically. A fresh set of AAs or CR123s that would normally last you six months might last six hours in the bitter cold. The battery gauge might suddenly blink empty, your electronic shutter might refuse to fire, or the autofocus motor will just give up and stall.
The trick here is body heat. I never keep my spare batteries in my camera bag during a winter shoot. Instead, I keep them in the innermost chest pocket of my coat, right against my body. If my camera dies in the middle of a shoot, I will take the cold battery out, swap it with the warm one from my jacket, and put the cold one in my pocket to "recharge" (it is amazing how much life comes back to a cold battery once you warm it up).
When Mechanical Cameras Get Cold Feet
You might be thinking that your fully manual, heavy brass camera from the 1960s is immune to the freezing cold. While it will not suffer from power failure, extreme cold brings out its own set of mechanical quirks.
Vintage cameras are full of tiny gears and moving parts, all of which were lubricated decades ago. When temperatures plummet, that thirty-year-old grease can stiffen up and turn into something resembling thick sludge. When this happens, your camera's internal timing gets thrown completely out of whack.
The most common symptom is shutter drag. You might set your camera to fire at 1/125th of a second, but because the internal lubricants are frozen, the shutter curtains drag across the film plane much slower—meaning you accidentally overexpose your image. Sometimes, on the slower speeds like 1/15th or half a second, the mirror will flip up and just get stuck there until you take the camera back inside to thaw.
If your shutter starts sounding slow, sluggish, or like a half-hearted sneeze instead of a crisp click, it is time to wrap the camera up and call it a day. Do not force the film advance lever if it feels stiff, either. Cold film becomes brittle, and if you crank the lever too hard when the camera is resisting, you can actually snap the film inside the canister.
The Silent Killer: Condensation
Surprisingly, the cold itself rarely ruins a camera. It is the transition back into the warmth that does the real damage. This is the single most important rule of winter photography, so listen close.
When you take a block of ice-cold metal and glass into a warm, humid environment—like your house, your car with the heater blasting, or a cozy cafe—moisture in the warm air immediately condenses onto the cold surfaces. In seconds, your lens will fog up, and beads of water will form all over the camera body. Worse, that same moisture is forming inside the camera, condensing on the mirror, the film, and the electronics. This is how you get internal rust, short circuits, and dreaded lens fungus later on.
To prevent this, you need to use the Ziploc bag trick. It is wonderfully simple and practically free:
- Before you come inside from the cold, put your camera into an airtight, sealable plastic bag. Press as much cold air out of it as you can, and seal it tight.
- Alternatively, put the camera in your heavily padded camera bag and zip it completely shut before walking indoors.
- Once inside, leave the camera in the bag for at least two to three hours. Do not open it to check. Just leave it.
By trapping the camera with cold, dry air, the warm, moist air of the room cannot touch the cold metal. The camera will slowly warm up to room temperature inside its protective bubble. Once it is warm to the touch, you can take it out safely without a single drop of condensation forming.
Also, out in the field, be careful not to breathe heavily on your viewfinder. In sub-zero temperatures, the moisture from your breath will freeze directly onto the glass, giving you a lovely sheet of ice to look through for the rest of the day.
Shooting in the Snow: Do Not Trust Your Meter
Once you are out there and your gear is behaving, you have to deal with the actual photography. Snow is notoriously tricky to meter for. The light meter inside your camera is designed to look at a scene and average it out to a middle-grey tone.
When you point your camera at a giant blanket of brilliant white snow, the meter panics. It thinks, "Whoa, this scene is way too bright! I need to darken this so it looks like middle grey." If you follow the camera's meter perfectly, your bright white winter wonderland will come out looking like dull, muddy, under-exposed slush.
To fix this, you have to override the camera. As a rule of thumb, when a scene is completely dominated by bright snow, you should overexpose by about one to two stops. If your meter says shoot at f/8, open up to f/5.6 or f/4 to let more light in. Trust me, it feels wrong to deliberately ignore the meter, but it is the only way to keep the snow looking crisp, bright, and genuinely white.
Gear Up for the Cold
If you want a reliable setup that will not die on you midway through a winter walk, I always suggest packing as light and manual as possible. Having a sturdy, fully mechanical camera body means less worrying about electronics failing when the windchill drops. It is also the perfect time of year to pick up a thick, comfortable strap so you can keep the camera securely across your chest, close to your body heat, rather than freezing your hands holding it.
External meters also do wonders in the snow, especially if you keep one warm in your coat pocket until you actually need to take a reading.
